Aromatized Garnacha
Alella Vinícola makes wines, cavas, and vermut. Since 1906, the cellar itself, like most of the vineyards they use, are located in the centre of the town of Alella, nine and a half miles north of Barcelona. They use red Garnacha they grow in Alella for their red wines and this vermut. They hand select the best herbs and spices of the Mediterranean, avoiding sweeter spices for more bitter ones from the genus Artemisia.
The spices are macerated directly in the wine once fermentation is complete. Finally, they sweeten the vermut with must (grape juice). Unlike classic Spanish vermuts, Barbarossa’s base wine is the star and sweetness is relegated to a supporting role.
